Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time and Zimbabwe is not immune to its impacts. From scorching heatwaves to devastating cyclones the country is already feeling the effects of global warming.

The Science Behind Climate Change

Global warming and the greenhouse effect are at the heart of the climate crisis. Human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation release massive amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, trapping heat and leading to rising temperatures.

Climate Change can be caused due energy generation whereby fossil fuel combustion and industrial processes are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

Deforestation and Land Use as veld fires, agricultural activities and energy-inefficient systems also play a significant role.

Impacts of Climate Change

•Too Much Water: Tropical cyclones bring destruction and flooding while droughts and dry spells devastate crops and livelihoods.

•Projected Changes: Zimbabwe can expect higher temperatures and reduced rainfall, exacerbating existing challenges.

Carbon trading offers a potential solution. By creating a carbon credit system, Zimbabwe can incentivise sustainable practices and reduce emissions.

Key aspects of carbon trading include Zimbabwe Carbon Authority responsible for regulating carbon investments and promoting sustainable development and Carbon Registry for enhancing transparency and accountability .

By understanding climate change and leveraging carbon markets, Zimbabwe can mitigate its impacts and build a more sustainable future. With 20% of carbon investments dedicated to sustainable development and 30% to climate change mitigation, adaptation and loss or damage the country can take meaningful steps towards a climate-resilient future.
