LEPHALALE, South Africa – In a significant bust, a 24-year-old man was arrested at the Stockport border post on Tuesday after police discovered a staggering R1.75 million in undeclared cash concealed in the boot of a rented vehicle he was driving.
The suspect was intercepted by alert officers while attempting to cross into Botswana. According to authorities, the money was meticulously hidden, prompting an immediate investigation.
Preliminary findings point to possible illicit financial activity. “Initial investigations suggest that the money may be linked to money laundering activities,” stated a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“The interception at the border is a significant breakthrough in disrupting such networks.”
The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned before the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court later today to face formal charges of money laundering.
The arrest underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat cross-border financial crime.
