Crimes and Courts
KWEKWE – An ambulance technician and two accomplices have been found guilty of theft after stealing money and airtime from a road accident victim they were tasked to assist, in a case that has shocked the local community.
The Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court convicted Edius Mugonegwa (40), an ambulance technician employed by Redcliff Municipality, along with Pride Makamba (25) and Anashe Mukwamba (23).
Prosecutors told the court that on September 7, 2025, Mugonegwa responded to an accident scene along the Kwekwe-Redcliff Road. While providing first aid to the injured victim, bloodstained cash totaling US$1,260 and US$10 airtime fell from the victim’s clothing.
Instead of safeguarding the property, the trio allegedly conspired to keep it for themselves.
The victim discovered the money was missing after regaining consciousness at Kwekwe General Hospital and immediately reported the theft to police.
“Swift investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Kwekwe led to the arrest of the three suspects, with part of the stolen cash recovered,” said a police spokesperson.
In sentencing, the magistrate handed down stern penalties. Mugonegwa received 18 months imprisonment with three months suspended for five years, and the remaining 15 months commuted to 825 hours of community service.
His accomplices, Makamba and Mukwamba, were each sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with three months suspended for five years, and nine months commuted to 315 hours of community service each.
A court official stated,
“This sentence sends a clear message that those entrusted with caring for the vulnerable will be held to the highest standards of integrity.”
