BULAWAYO – The Goat Breeders Association of Zimbabwe (GBAZ) will host its annual Goat Indaba and Training Courses from October 23 to 26 in Bulawayo, with a sharp focus on safeguarding the prized Matebele and Mashona goat breeds.

The event, running under the theme “Preserving our Indigenous Goats—Understanding the Matebele & Mashona Breed Standards,” is set to bring together farmers, breeders, agricultural experts, policymakers, and livestock enthusiasts from across Zimbabwe.

In a statement, GBAZ Chairperson Mr. Sifiso Agbetorwoka emphasized the vital role of indigenous goats in the nation’s agricultural framework.

“Our indigenous goat breeds, the Matebele and Mashona, are a cornerstone of our agricultural heritage,” he said.

“They are uniquely adapted to our climate, resistant to many common diseases, and require minimal inputs, making them ideal for smallholder farmers.”

The four-day program will include technical and practical training sessions, panel discussions, breed showcases, and a market and auction platform. A key highlight will be the “Catch Them Young Mentorship” programme, designed to introduce youth to goat farming as a sustainable venture.

“We want to inspire the next generation of farmers,” Mr. Agbetorwoka added.

“Goat farming offers real opportunities for entrepreneurship and food security.”

The indaba will also provide networking opportunities for participants to share strategies and form partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable goat production. The event is open to both GBAZ members and non-members.
