HWANGE – Conservation authorities in Hwange have launched a reinforced offensive against illegal logging and charcoal production, as the region’s ecologically rich forests face escalating threats from organised syndicates.
The vast forest reserves in Matabeleland North, home to rare tree species and unique ecosystems, are under increased protection following a rise in wood poaching incidents. In response, the Forestry Commission and Hwange Rural District Council have strengthened monitoring and enforcement efforts while rallying local communities to safeguard their natural heritage.
Mr. Elijah Nkomo, Senior Ranger at Hwange RDC, issued a stern warning to those involved in the illegal trade:
“You are only sabotaging yourselves. When it rains and we no longer have those trees, it works against us. Our traditional leaders even have the power to prosecute for such acts. Let’s respect our areas and not just cut trees.”
He revealed the scale of the problem, stating:
“The other day, we intercepted a truck carrying 200 bags of charcoal. Imagine how many trees were burnt.”
Ms. Precious Sibelo, Security Officer at the Forestry Commission, emphasized the devastating impact of charcoal production:
“Destroying the whole forest just to make a bag of charcoal is a big injustice not only to the present but even for future generations. You are cutting trees for a gain which doesn’t even add up or make sense.”
Despite the challenges, the province has recorded significant gains in forest preservation. Authorities reported very low incidents of uncontrolled fires this season, marking an important step forward in conservation efforts.
The crackdown comes at a critical time when climate change effects are causing increased environmental damage across the region. Experts stress the urgency of promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable alternatives to charcoal production.
