TOKYO, JAPAN – Veteran Zimbabwean long-distance runner Isaac Mpofu delivered an outstanding performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday morning, securing a prestigious top 10 finish in the men’s marathon.

The 38-year-old national record holder clocked a season’s best time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 46 seconds, cementing his status as one of Zimbabwe’s most consistent and accomplished athletes on the global stage. This marked Mpofu’s fourth appearance at the World Championships, making him the most experienced member of the eight-athlete Team Zimbabwe contingent.

His teammate, Tendai Zimuto, made a creditable debut in the grueling event, finishing 61st with a time of 2:28:10 in challenging Tokyo heat.

Team Zimbabwe’s long-distance coach, Benson Chauke, praised the athletes’ efforts, highlighting their dedication and resilience.

“It was not easy out there in the incredible Tokyo heat, and it is highly commendable to have Isaac finish in the top 10 and for Zimuto to try his best in his first marathon at the World Championships,” Chauke said.

“This is a result of the hard work, determination, and sacrifice the athletes have put in.”

There was less fortune for debutant Ashley Miller, who missed out on the semi-finals of the Women’s 400m hurdles after finishing eighth in her heat with a time of 56.35, placing 37th overall.

The men’s marathon was won by Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu in a dramatic photo-finish, clocking 2:09:48, the same time as second-placed German Amanal Petros.

Mpofu’s achievement provides a significant boost for Zimbabwean athletics, showcasing the nation’s potential to compete among the world’s best.
