GLENDALE, Mashonaland Central – A dramatic shootout between police and an armed gang led to the foiling of a robbery at the Glendale Post Office in the early hours of Friday morning, resulting in one arrest.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the incident occurred at approximately 12:50 AM on September 12, 2025, when a group of five suspects stormed the ZIMPOST offices.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the details and the subsequent arrest.
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Tinashe Cloud Jokonya (40) in connection with a foiled armed robbery,” Comm. Nyathi stated.
“A reaction team responded to the scene and were shot at by the suspects. Police retaliated, leading to the suspects fleeing. Investigations are underway to account for the outstanding four suspects.”
The gang initially overpowered a security guard on duty, seizing his Cobra machine gun, cellphone, and pepper spray before binding his hands and feet with shoelaces. They then forced their way through screen doors to gain access to the building.
Their mission was abruptly halted when an alert security guard from a neighbouring premises noticed the commotion and immediately alerted the police. The swift response by a ZRP reaction team prompted a fierce exchange of gunfire with the suspects, who subsequently scattered and fled into the surrounding darkness. Jokonya was apprehended at the scene.
Following a search of the area, police recovered an assortment of tools believed to have been intended for the robbery. These included grinders, cutting discs, wire cutters, batteries, gloves, caps, and a magazine loaded with dummy rounds.
Manhunts are currently underway for the remaining four suspects.
