A decomposing body of a 52 year old man was found by the roadside along Luveve Road in Bulawayo.
Mandlenkosi’s body was found lying beside the road along Luveve Road opposite a private clinic in Luveve 4 Suburb.
Bulawayo’s Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.
Insp. Ncube said Ngqabutho Brian Sibanda (25) from Nkulumane Suburb has been arrested for a hit and run incident.
Investigations have revealed that an accident happened on Monday afternoon when Mandlenkosi Sibanda (52) was hit by a car and lost his life.
Passersby who discovered the body made a report to Luveve Police Station report who attended the scene and found the body lying facing upwards in a thorny bush with tall grass about 6 metres from the road. The body had begun to decompose.
Insp. Ncube added that Mandlenkosi’s body had bruises on the neck and a broken right hand. The body was ferried to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for postmortem.
Police then gathered evidence which pointed to Ngqabutho having knocked down Mandlenkosi and fled from the scene.
Skid marks and debris of broken lens were scattered on the road indicating that an accident had taken place.
On Tuesday 1 March police received a report that a Yellow Honda Fit with registration number AEL 5001 had fallen into a trench.
Through investigations carried out by the police uncovered that the damages on his vehicle were inconsistent with a vehicle that had fallen into a trench.
“There were some blood stains on the top right side of the windscreen,” Insp. Ncube explained.
Ngqabutho was thoroughly quizzed about the blood which was on his windscreen since the police were already armed with information on a fatal hit and run accident which had occurred the previous day.
Eventually Ngqabutho confessed to being involved in an accident along Luveve Road on the 27th February at around midnight. The same debris found at the scene matched with those found on his motor vehicle and he was arrested.
Nqabutho is unlicensed.
Insp. Ncube urges members of the public to stop and render assistance to victims of accidents including reporting the accident within 24 hours.
“It is important not to leave the place of accident before the arrival of the police worse still before casualties or deceased persons are safely removed from the scene,” he added.
Members of the public are also urged to desist from driving without licences as they end up causing accidents which result in loss of life.
