HARARE – Members from the elite presidential guard were involved in a gun robbery at a farm in Beatrice.
The two soldiers are party of a gang that raided a family and robbed them of their cash and other belongings. Another robber was a retired member from the same presidential guard.
Other members of the gang have not been identified.
Presidential Guard have been arrested after a family was robbed at gunpoint at a farm in Beatrice, Mashonaland East.
Fate did not favour the two serving presidential guard members and their retired colleague.
Munyaradzi Munyuki, 27, Busani Moyo, 29, and Shadreck Kadira, 33, robbed their victims of ofroperty worth US$2,135 on February 28.
Munyuki and Moyo are serving members of the elite 1st Presidential Guard Battalion, whose duty is to ensure President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s safety.
Information from the police suggest that the trio connived with three others who are still at large to raid Houmoed Farm.
Act as experts they overpowered Luke Williams, 19, who was taking a breather in his bedroom cottage.
Luke was tied with shoe laces and forced to hand over US$250 at gun pointed.
Leaving Luke tied up the robbers then invaded fsrm house where they woke up David George Rickards, 67, and his wife Philliper Rickards, 62.
Threatening to shoot the couple the gang demanded more money and valuables to which police say, Philliper handed over US$850.
The robbers ordered the couple to open the safe which contained ZWL$1,000 in Z$5 notes.
The robbers did not touch this amount.
One of the robbers mistakenly triggered the panic alarm as he tried to switch off the outside perimeter lights.
This awoke the farm workers and the Rickards’ son, Stewart, who called Beatrice police.
Dividing themselves into two groups the robbers fled the scene.
In arrival the Police Officers tracked their footprints to the Harare-Masvingo Road and saw Munyuki, Moyo and Kadira trying to get transport heading towards Harare.
The ZR Police found an unmarked vehicle which stopped for the unsuspecting robbers, before driving towards Harare.
A trap had already been set at and a police roadblock was mounted 20km out of Beatrice resulting in the trio being placed under arrest.
Property recovered was a bracelet and a knife stolen at the farm. Each suspect was found with aUS$160, US$172 and US$155 on them.
Investigators are on the hunt for the three other suspects only identified as Shumba Murambwi, a Junior and one Kheda.
