HARARE – The Government has issued a four-month ultimatum to all unregistered private schools operating in the country, directing them to regularise their operations by December 31, 2025, or face immediate closure in the new year.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerai Moyo, in the National Assembly on Wednesday. The grace period is intended to prevent disruption for students who are currently preparing for or sitting for their end-of-year examinations.
Minister Moyo stated that the move targets schools that are operating without government oversight, often employing unqualified teachers and failing to meet the required standards.
“We have given illegal schools a grace period of four months because we did not want to close those schools haphazardly, as this disadvantages the learners because, by so doing, we would have violated their fundamental right, the right to education,” Minister Moyo said.
He further elaborated on the timeline for compliance, adding,
“It is better (for the meantime) we appeal to directors to follow procedures so that they register their schools, and we have given them a grace period until December 31 so that come January, we can invoke our circulars and close those schools.”
The decision comes amid growing concerns from officials and parents over the proliferation of substandard and unregulated private learning institutions across the country. The government has warned that it will not hesitate to shutter all non-compliant schools once the deadline passes.
