HARARE – Zimbabwe’s Acting President, Dr. Constantino Chiwenga, has announced the passing of Ambassador Stuart Comberbach, who succumbed to cancer-related complications in the United Kingdom on Thursday. He was 72 years old.
Ambassador Comberbach was a distinguished diplomat whose career spanned nearly five decades, serving in numerous senior government and diplomatic roles. At the time of his passing, he was Zimbabwe’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.
Acting President Chiwenga expressed profound sorrow at the loss, describing Comberbach as a dedicated public servant whose patriotism was unwavering.
“During his five decades of professional service to the Government, Ambassador Comberbach demonstrated a rare and unwavering commitment to duty,” said Chiwenga.
“His patriotism was never in question, and he believed that our differences in race, colour and creed only served to enrich our shared humanity as one family in a unified Zimbabwe.”
Chiwenga extended condolences on behalf of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the government, the ruling ZANU PF party, and the nation to Comberbach’s wife and family.
Ambassador Comberbach’s extensive career included postings as Ambassador to Italy, Japan, and South Korea. He also served as Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade from 2018 to 2021, and as Secretary of the Corporate Governance Unit in the Office of the President and Cabinet from 2014 to 2018.
His early roles included head of the Zimbabwe Trade Mission in Johannesburg, South Africa, and various positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980.
He was widely respected in international diplomatic circles for his articulate advocacy of Zimbabwe’s interests and values.
The government has indicated that arrangements for official mourning and memorial services will be announced in due course.
