MUREHWA – Police in Mashonaland East have arrested a 42-year-old man following allegations that he raped his seven-year-old niece and subsequently attempted to bribe her with vegetables to ensure her silence.
The case, which came to light through an anonymous tip-off, occurred last month but was only reported to the Murehwa Police Station last week.
According to Mashonaland East police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii, the incident took place in a garden in August.
“Sometime in August this year, at around 0900 hours, the accused person, who is the complainant’s uncle, asked her to accompany him to the garden to get some vegetables where he raped her,” Insp Chazovachii stated.
“After the act, he instructed the complainant not to reveal the matter to anyone and he gave her vegetables and told her to go back home,” he added.
The man also allegedly threatened the child to prevent her from speaking out about the assault.
Insp Chazovachii confirmed that police action was triggered by community vigilance.
“The police swiftly reacted and went to the scene after ZRP Murehwa received an anonymous tip-off that the accused person had sexually abused the complainant. The complainant was interviewed and she revealed the matter.”
The young victim was immediately referred to Murehwa Hospital for medical examinations and necessary support.
The police spokesperson praised the role of the public in combating crime, highlighting the importance of community cooperation.
“We hail community members who are always alerting the police whenever crimes are committed,” Insp Chazovachii said.
The suspect’s name has been withheld to protect the identity of the minor.
