Reggae-dancehall superstar Winky D made a bold stylistic statement at his highly anticipated Tete-a-Tete concert last night, performing in full camouflage attire—a move that has been explained as a deeply symbolic tribute to his historic rise to the throne of Zimdancehall.
The iconic outfit choice coincided strategically with the 2025 Zimdancehall Cup Clash, an event where a new king was being crowned.
According to Ranga Tagwirei, a close associate of the artist, Winky D’s camouflage was a deliberate throwback to the night 16 years ago when he was first crowned the King of Zimdancehall at the Harare Gardens—wearing similar military-inspired gear.
In a statement that resonated with fans, Tagwirei emphasized that nothing Winky D does is without meaning:
“You see me in army gear because I’m a fighter! The Gafa President Winky D DiBigman returns in camouflage—a powerful throwback to 16 years ago at the Cup Clash in Harare Gardens, where he was crowned King of Zimdancehall. There is always a theme to every Winky D outfit and every playlist; nothing is by chance, it’s all part of the message.”
The camouflage not only served as a nostalgic nod to his origins but also reinforced his image as a “fighter” and enduring figure in the music industry, still reigning and relevant more than a decade and a half after his coronation.
The concert timing and outfit were widely interpreted as a respectful acknowledgment of the new talent emerging in the genre, while firmly reaffirming his legendary status.
