Crimes and Court

RUWA – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed widespread social media reports claiming an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of prominent Ruwa businessman, Joseph Mutangadura.

The 67-year-old was fatally shot during a suspected armed robbery at his home on Sunday night and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Police have launched a manhunt for seven suspects.

On Thursday, social media platforms were flooded with unverified messages alleging one suspect had been apprehended following a gunfight with law enforcement agents in the Gazebo area. The posts further claimed the suspect had revealed his accomplices were hiding in Epworth.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, categorically denied these claims, urging the public to disregard the misinformation.

“People should disregard what is being circulated on social media. The police will officially pronounce any developments regards the Mutangadura incident,” Comm Nyathi said.

“Those who are putting information on social media which is not verified should be careful, lest they interfere with investigations and in the process derail what the police is doing.”

He confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the community of Goromonzi remains in shock following the tragic death of Mr. Mutangadura, who is remembered as a generous and influential figure.

Rogers Pote, a local resident, described the deceased as a pillar of the community.

“He was good at putting smiles on the people… This is a huge loss to the Goromonzi community and the province as a whole,” Pote said.

Mr. Mutangadura will be laid to rest at the Goromonzi Turnoff Cemetery on Saturday. A church service will be held at his Ruwa home on Friday, where the body will repose overnight.
