BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe – Social media personality Jay Israel Senior finds himself at the centre of hypocrisy allegations after a stark contrast emerged between his fiery 2020 anti-government posts and his recent threats against Zimbabwean UFC fighter Themba Gorimbo for criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The episode highlights the internet’s unforgiving memory and raises questions about Israel Senior’s motivations.

The 2020 Crusade: #MnangagwaMustGo & Apartheid Comparisons

On August 3, 2020, Israel Senior took to social media with vehement criticism:

  • ZimbabweanLivesMatter & #MnangagwaMustGo: He used these hashtags while declaring solidarity with Zimbabweans against the “evil Regime”.
  • Brutality & Failed Promises: He accused the government of “brutalizing and depriving people of their human rights,” abducting citizens, and arresting protesters, stating Mnangagwa had “failed dismally.”
  • Apartheid Comparison: In a direct and inflammatory comparison, Israel Senior declared:

“APARTHEID AND MNANGAGWA’S GOVERNMENT ARE THE SAME.”

  • Call for Resignation: He explicitly demanded Mnangagwa’s resignation: “It is time for ED Mnangagwa to resign…”

The 2024 Crusade: Defender of the Presidency & Legal Threats

Fast forward to a post made just hours ago (as of writing), and Israel Senior’s stance appears diametrically opposed:

  • Threats Against Gorimbo: He openly declared telling Themba Gorimbo he would “never set foot in Zimbabwe or South Africa” if he continued insulting the President, framing this as a “stand for the dignity of our Head of State.”
  • Reporting to Authorities: Israel Senior claims to have “documented” Gorimbo’s “obscene and degrading language” and “forwarded [it] in full to the relevant authorities,” stating the matter is now with the law.
  • Invoking Section 33: He cited Section 33 of the Criminal Law Act, declaring criticism a right but “insults” a crime, arguing this protects national dignity and sovereignty.
  • Patriotism Redefined: He asserted: “Patriotism means disagreeing with dignity not dragging your own nation’s image into the mud…”

The Internet’s Exposing Power: Hypocrisy Laid Bare

The rapid juxtaposition of these two positions by Israel Senior, separated by four years, has been made possible – and inescapable – by the internet’s permanence. Social media archives ensure past statements remain accessible, allowing for direct comparison. This digital paper trail has exposed a dramatic reversal:

  • The man who once equated Mnangagwa’s rule with apartheid now positions himself as its chief online defender.
  • The activist who called for protests against state brutality now threatens legal action against others exercising their right to criticise.
  • The voice demanding Mnangagwa’s resignation now champions laws criminalising insults against the same office.

The Motive Question: Principle or Patronage?
This stark reversal inevitably prompts questions about Jay Israel Senior’s true motivations:

  1. Genuine Change of Heart? Has he undergone a profound political conversion, genuinely believing his past views were wrong and that defending the presidency is now paramount?
  2. Seeking Favours? Is this sudden zeal for defending Mnangagwa an attempt to curry favour with the government or ZANU-PF figures? Is he seeking political recognition, access, or leniency?
  3. The “Chivayo Car” Factor? Most pointedly, given the well-publicised trend of controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo gifting luxury cars to celebrities and personalities who publicly support the ruling party and President Mnangagwa, speculation is rife. Is Jay Israel Senior’s vocal defence of the presidency a calculated performance aimed at securing similar patronage and rewards, perhaps even the coveted keys to a new vehicle?

The timing and nature of his about-turn, coupled with the high-profile rewards culture associated with government support, lend credence to the cynical interpretations circulating online. His transformation from fierce critic to enforcer, leveraging legal threats on behalf of the state, appears more like a bid for inclusion within the very establishment he once denounced, rather than a principled evolution.

Israel Senior has yet to publicly address the contradiction between his 2020 statements and his current stance, or the speculation about his motivations. His dramatic shift serves as a potent reminder: in the digital age, your online past is always present, ready to challenge your present narrative.
