Masvingo/Hwange, Zimbabwe – Tragedy struck in two separate road accidents in Masvingo and Hwange earlier this week, claiming the lives of seven people.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incidents, which left several others injured.
In the first incident, six people lost their lives when a Toyota Quantum carrying 22 Zion Christian Church congregants veered off the road and overturned near the 283-kilometer peg on the Mutare-Masvingo Road early Sunday. According to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, 16 others were injured in the crash.
“The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo General Hospital for postmortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital,” Nyathi said.
“The names of the victims will be released as soon as the identification process by their next of kin is complete.”
In a separate incident, one person died and 20 were injured when a Nissan NP300 with 20 passengers overturned near a bridge on Four Mile Drive, close to Hwange Colliery Training Centre, on Saturday morning. Nyathi attributed the accident to a broken left rim, which caused the vehicle to veer off the road and land on its roof.
“One person was killed while twenty others were injured when a Nissan NP300 vehicle… veered off the road before overturning and landing on its roof after the vehicle’s left rim had broken,” Nyathi said.
The police spokesperson urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, emphasizing the importance of observing road rules and regulations to protect lives.
“We appeal to motorists to avoid speeding and to observe all road rules and regulations to protect lives,” Nyathi said.
As the nation mourns the loss of lives, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterate the importance of road safety and responsible driving.
