New Zealand beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 359 runs in Bulawayo on Saturday 09 August, claiming their biggest-ever Test victory and sealing a 2-0 series win. The home team was bowled out for just 117 in their second innings, unable to respond to New Zealand’s massive 601/3 declared.
Three New Zealand batsmen scored centuries—Devon Conway (153), Rachin Ravindra (165 not out), and Henry Nicholls (150 not out). On his Test debut, fast bowler Zakary Foulkes was the star with the ball, taking 9 wickets in the match, including 5 in the second innings.
Zimbabwe struggled to score, with Nick Welch top scoring with 47 not out. Captain Craig Ervine made 17, and extras were the third-highest scorer with 16 runs. Brendan Taylor, back after a long ban, only managed 7 runs. Brian Bennett got out for a duck, and Sikandar Raza also fell cheaply.
New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry said the team worked well together and used the new ball effectively.
“We wanted to strike early, and everyone backed themselves,” he said.
Zimbabwe’s captain Craig Ervine, admitted they were outplayed.
“It’s been a tough series. New Zealand showed the level we need to reach.”
The win shows just how strong New Zealand is right now and how much Zimbabwe needs to improve.
