Highlanders Fans Stage Protest, Demand New Leadership Amid Financial Mismanagement Claims

BULAWAYO – A section of Highlanders FC supporters, identifying themselves as “Bosso ultras,” staged a visible protest during the team’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Green Fuel last Sunday. The group expressed strong dissatisfaction with the club’s current executive and board, demanding their resignation.

The protesters circulated a banner around the stadium before mounting it near the Soweto goal post. The banner carried a clear message:

“New executive, new board members, no to misuse of Bosso funds. Sikhathele ngamasela (We are tired of thieves).”

The protest drew attention not only for its message but also due to the involvement of a woman identified as a close relative of Nodumo Nyathi. Nyathi was a candidate for the club chairmanship in the 2024 elections. This connection led to immediate speculation among fans that Nyathi might have orchestrated or funded the protest.

However, contacted for comment, Nyathi issued a vehement denial of any involvement.

“Mina? Bayangihlolela (Me? They are framing me),” Nyathi stated emphatically.

“I stood against official VONC (vote of no confidence) against Johnfat (Sibanda, immediate past Bosso chairman) and his team and you think I can sponsor such things.”

Nyathi expressed frustration at the suggestion of his involvement, questioning the motives behind linking him to the protest.

“Am not sure why people will try and paint me this bad. I thought elections adlula (are over), do they still feel good ukungingcolisa (to tarnish me) on lies? For what gain?”

The protest highlights ongoing tensions within the Highlanders fanbase regarding the club’s leadership and financial management. The club’s executive and board have yet to issue a formal public response to the protest or the specific allegations raised on the banner.
