Frank Chirisa is a name that’s been making waves in the comedy scene. This award-winning comedian, actor, mental health advocate, and writer has been entertaining audiences with his unique brand of humor. With a string of sold-out shows and appearances on TV and radio under his belt, Chirisa is undoubtedly one of the most exciting talents to emerge from Zimbabwe’s comedy landscape.
Chirisa’s journey into comedy began with a dare from friends in February 2020 at an Ametors Comedy Night in Cape Town. This initial foray into the world of stand-up comedy sparked a passion that would drive him to become one of the leading comedians in Zimbabwe.
His first comedy inspiration was Clive, and as he honed his craft, he drew inspiration from legendary comedians like Lenny Bruce.
“When I started to grow and understand myself better, I started researching comedians from long back, in order to learn more on comedy and improve,” said Chirisa.
Chirisa’s big break came with his nomination for Outstanding Comedian at the 2022 Bulawayo Arts Awards, followed by a win at the 2023 Matabeleland Awards. These accolades not only recognized his talent but also fueled his desire to share laughter with a broader audience. Notably, he became the first comedian to fill up the Bulawayo Theatre, with 403 people attending his show.
Chirisa’s talents have taken him beyond Zimbabwe’s borders. He performed at the O Mokae? Comedy Festival in Gaborone, Botswana, where he met South African celebrity couple Tsitsi Chiumye and Galaletsanga Gina Koffman. This encounter not only boosted his confidence but also opened doors to new opportunities. He was even invited to explore the comedy scene in Johannesburg.
Chirisa’s vision extends beyond personal success. He aims to create a thriving comedy industry in Bulawayo, inspiring a new generation of comedians. To this end, he co-established Burg Comedy Club, which has attracted talent from Harare and cemented his influence in the comedy scene.
“I want to be an international superstar without relocating and to leave a lasting impact on the entertainment industry in Zimbabwe,” Chirisa stated.
With his fifth anniversary as a stand-up comedian marked in February 2025, Chirisa shows no signs of slowing down. He’ll be headlining the Intwasa Comedy Night with Mbongeni on September 24, 2025, and embarking on a national tour from October to November. His legacy aspirations are clear: to be an international superstar without relocating and to leave a lasting impact on the world of comedy.
