Crimes and Courts
Harare, – Harare Regional Magistrate Donald Ndirowei has dismissed former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi’s application contesting his placement on remand, setting the stage for his trial to proceed.
Magistrate Ndirowei ordered Mzembi to return to court this Friday for the allocation of a trial date. The ruling comes after the court confirmed three outstanding arrest warrants against the former minister, issued due to his failure to appear in court since November 2018.
Earlier, Ndirowei had also rejected Mzembi’s bid to cancel the warrants, stating that his absence from court was “deliberate.”
“The court finds no merit in the application challenging remand, given the accused’s prolonged and unexplained absence from proceedings,” Ndirowei said in his ruling.
“The warrants remain valid, and the trial must move forward.”
Mzembi, who faces undisclosed charges, has yet to publicly comment on the latest court decision. Legal experts suggest the dismissal signals the judiciary’s firm stance on ensuring accountability, particularly in cases involving high-profile figures.
