Bulawayo – Councilor Muslin Hwiza, the Proportional Representation (PR) Councilor for Ruwa Local Board, was among the participants at the 4th Edition of the All Councillors’ Indaba 2025. Hwiza, who suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and Arthrosis, has inspired an outpouring of support from fellow councilors and community members.
Understanding Her Condition
Arthrosis, also known as osteoarthritis, is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It commonly affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine.
Ankylosing Spondylitis, on the other hand, is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that primarily targets the spine. Over time, inflammation can cause vertebrae to fuse, resulting in severe pain and restricted movement. Symptoms include:
- Chronic back pain and stiffness, especially in the morning
- Fatigue
- Joint pain in the hips, shoulders, or heels
- Eye inflammation (uveitis) in some cases
Hwiza’s condition has progressed to the point where she cannot sit without a specially designed chair.
At the writing of this story she has been standing from 09.00 am until the President arrived at around 13.30 in the afternoon.
A Lifelong Struggle
In an emotional interview, Hwiza revealed that her symptoms began between the ages of 7 and 12, but the inability to sit only started in 2021.
“Some people, even fellow councilors, have been very insulting, but I’m used to it,” she shared.
“Some even vowed that I would never get the chair I need.”
Despite the challenges, Hwiza remains resilient, crediting her supportive council and colleagues for standing by her.
“My council is very supportive, especially with medical aid. The main issue is transport—I use the council car, but it has to serve everyone. If His Excellency could assist me with one, it would make a huge difference,” she added.
She also expressed deep gratitude to Town Secretary Mr. Madanhi, Admin Manager TC Musiza, and Councilor Chirowodza for their unwavering support.
Generosity on Display
During the event, Master of Ceremonies DJ Masomere highlighted Hwiza’s plight, prompting an immediate response from attendees. Ministers, councilors, and mayors rallied together, donating over USD 1,500 to help her acquire the specialized chair she requires.
“I’m short of words. I want to thank everyone who helped me,” an emotional Hwiza said.
