TSHOLOTSHO – A 25-year-old herdsman, Matthew Munsaka, appeared in court this week facing serious allegations of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in what has left the rural Tsholotsho community reeling with shock and anger.
According to court records, the alleged assault occurred on April 19, 2015, in a bushy area of Folosi Line where the minor was herding goats. The complainant, a Form 2 student at Samahuru Secondary School, recounted the harrowing details:
“He pulled up my skirt, removed my underwear, and forced himself on me. I was threatened not to tell anyone.”
After the ordeal, the complainant reported the incident to her mother, who immediately alerted authorities. The accused was arrested two days later following a report filed at ZRP Tsholotsho.
During cross-examination, Munsaka’s line of questioning raised eyebrows when he diverted from addressing the assault allegations directly. Instead, he focused on probing the nature of his relationship with the victim.
Magistrate Sibonginkosi Nkandla swiftly intervened:
“The court requires relevant questions pertaining to the charges. Kindly confine your inquiries to matters directly related to this case.”
Legal experts present noted this as a tactical avoidance strategy, potentially undermining the accused’s credibility.
The case has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit Tsholotsho community, with residents expressing outrage and fear.
“The child’s life is forever changed. We pray for her healing, but this darkness hanging over us won’t lift easily,” shared a community member who attended the proceedings.
Local child rights activist Nomagugu Ndlovu condemned the incident:
“When predators target children in broad daylight, it means our protective systems have failed. Justice must be swift and severe.”
The matter was adjourned to allow for further investigations. Munsaka remains in custody as the state prepares its full evidence docket.
