Autopsy Reveals Kenyan Blogger Was Assaulted to Death in Police Custody

NAIROBI, Kenya — A Kenyan blogger detained for criticizing a senior police official died from severe head trauma and neck compression caused by assault, a post-mortem examination revealed Wednesday, contradicting police claims that the injuries were self-inflicted.

“Clear Evidence of External Assault”

State pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia presented damning findings after examining Albert Ojwang’s body:

  • Multiple head injuries inconsistent with police claims he “hit his head against a cell wall”
  • Neck compression and widespread soft tissue trauma
  • Pattern of injuries indicating a violent struggle

“The bleeds were spaced across his face, sides, and back of the head—this was no accident,” Dr. Midia told reporters.

“These were externally inflicted injuries.”

Outcry Over “Brutal Murder”

The 31-year-old teacher and digital creator, known for political commentary on X (formerly Twitter), was arrested Friday in Homa Bay over a post allegedly criticizing Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. He died Saturday after being transferred 350km to Nairobi’s Central Police Station.

“Albert was tortured and brutally murdered,” declared Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya.

“We demand every involved officer be held personally accountable.”

Ojwang’s father, Meshack, made an emotional plea to President William Ruto:

“The officers saw our humble home and thought we didn’t matter. Help me get justice.”

Political Fallout and Protests

The case has ignited nationwide anger:

  • Police IG Douglas Kanja suspended officers on duty during the incident
  • IPOA oversight body launched an investigation
  • Protesters rallied outside Nairobi mortuary chanting “Stop killing us”

Opposition leader Raila Odinga condemned the “horrifying” death as part of a pattern of police brutality against “young, defenseless Kenyans.”

The Digital Content Creators Association mourned Ojwang as “a voice of the youth using platforms to inspire change,” vowing his legacy wouldn’t be silenced.

Broader Implications

Rights groups warn the killing may intimidate Kenya’s digital community. As investigations continue, public pressure mounts for accountability in a case exposing tensions between law enforcement and freedom of expression.
