Flight Chaos Grips Middle East as Iran-Israel Conflict Disrupts 500+ Flights

Zim GBC News Reporter
Dubai — Air travel across the Middle East descended into chaos on Saturday as escalating tensions between Israel and Iran forced the cancellation or delay of over 500 flights, stranding thousands of passengers and triggering widespread operational disruptions.

Major airlines, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Saudia, and Air India, suspended services or diverted flights amid missile attacks, air defense operations, and emergency shelter alerts. Aviation authorities cited safety concerns and regional instability as the primary reasons for the disruptions.

At Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport, 53 flights were canceled following Iranian missile strikes, which Tehran claimed were retaliation for an alleged Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities. U.S. forces reportedly assisted in intercepting some of the projectiles, but the heightened threat prompted multiple carriers to halt operations.

“Due to the ongoing security situation, Delta has temporarily suspended flights to Tel Aviv and is evaluating route adjustments,” a Delta Air Lines spokesperson said.

United Airlines and KLM also confirmed cancellations, while FlyDubai rerouted several flights away from Israeli airspace.

Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the world’s busiest travel hubs, recorded 85 cancellations and 184 delays, with Emirates and FlyDubai bearing the brunt of the disruptions. Nearby Sharjah International Airport reported an additional 57 affected flights.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority,” an Emirates representative stated.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and will resume normal operations as soon as conditions allow.”

Hamad International Airport in Doha saw 22 cancellations and 83 delays, primarily impacting Qatar Airways. Meanwhile, Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport logged 68 disruptions, mostly involving budget carrier Pegasus Airlines.

“Airspace restrictions and crew availability issues have compounded the challenges,” a Qatar Airways official said.

“We are working to minimize passenger inconvenience and provide alternative arrangements where possible.”

With fears of a broader regional conflict growing, international carriers are reassessing flight paths through the Middle East. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European aviation regulators have issued advisories urging caution when operating in affected airspace.

“Given the volatility, airlines must prioritize safety over schedule,” an industry analyst said.

“The ripple effects of these disruptions could last for days, if not longer.”

As diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis continue, travelers are being urged to check with their airlines for updates. With no immediate resolution in sight, aviation authorities warn that further delays and cancellations remain likely in the coming days.
