Pit Bull Owner Remanded in Custody Amid Culpable Homicide and Rape Charges

Crimes and Courts
HARARE – Mike Mapinga, a local resident, has been remanded in custody following a court appearance on charges of culpable homicide stemming from a fatal dog attack in Bluffhill over the weekend.

Mapinga is accused of negligence after allegedly leaving his four dogs—three Pit Bulls and a Rottweiler—unattended overnight, leading to a tragic incident that resulted in the death of Samuel Machara, a passer-by.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the dogs reportedly escaped from Mapinga’s property and attacked Machara.

“The canines scaled a low perimeter wall before launching the attack on the victim,” the State outlined during court proceedings.

Machara suffered severe injuries, including deep wounds to his neck and lacerations on his arms, legs, and abdomen, ultimately succumbing to his injuries.

During the court session on Monday, the State indicated that written submissions from Mapinga’s legal representation were expected by the end of the day.

“We are preparing our case and will respond to the State’s claims on Thursday,” stated Mapinga’s defense counsel.

The court has since rolled over the matter to Friday to provide Mapinga’s lawyer additional time to compile the necessary documentation.

One of the Pit Bulls involved in the attack was identified by both the accused and witnesses, and it was discovered with bloodstains on its body. Following the incident, all four dogs were confiscated by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

In a separate legal development, Mapinga’s challenges intensified when he appeared before regional magistrate Sandra Mupindu regarding a default inquiry linked to rape charges. He is expected to return to court on Wednesday for the rape-related matter, while his culpable homicide hearing is scheduled for Friday.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Mapinga remains in remand custody, facing serious charges that will impact his future.

The community watches closely as the case highlights issues surrounding pet ownership responsibilities and public safety.
