Bulawayo – The Bulawayo Arts Festival opens tomorrow (30 May) with its flagship “Comedy Meets Poetry” event at Stanley Hall, the city’s oldest traditional venue in Makokoba township.

The fusion showcase will feature prominent local artists including comedian Ntando van Moyo, performers Thaluso and Sgoqa the Poet, and comedians General Lesley and Nkosi King D’Jun.

City of Bulawayo Arts, Culture and Heritage Officer Nomashawekazi Damasane told Zim GBC News this year’s festival theme, “Celebrating Royalty,” honors cultural contributors:

“We’re not just showcasing performances – we’re celebrating those who lift Bulawayo’s name through their work and talent.”

The week-long festival highlights the city’s legacy as Zimbabwe’s cultural hub, though Damasane acknowledged challenges:

“Despite producing icons like Albert Nyathi, Sandra Ndebele, and Jeys Marabini, we face talent drain due to competition from Harare and South Africa.”

Stanley Hall, located in historic surbub Makokoba, will host multiple events aimed at reviving interest in local arts. The festival runs until 6 June with theatre, music, and craft exhibitions citywide.
