Harare, Zimbabwe – The Africa Day holiday turned tragic as eight individuals lost their lives, and 22 others sustained injuries in 128 road traffic accidents reported by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Tuesday.
This marks a concerning rise in fatalities compared to the previous year.
The ZRP revealed that while the total number of accidents decreased from 190 in 2024 to 128 this year, the number of fatal crashes saw an uptick.
In 2025, there were seven fatal incidents resulting in eight deaths, compared to six fatalities in 2024. Injuries also decreased from 35 last year to 22 this year.
In a separate incident on May 26, 2025, four victims were identified following an accident at the 30-kilometre peg along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road. The deceased include Lazarus Takanyara (47) of DISO, Mashava; Albert Gwaimani (47) of C93 Lenox Mine, Mashava; Ashley Zangure (19) of Zangure Village, Ngundu; and Stella Dzingai, a seven-month-old infant from Makono Village, Bikita.
In light of these tragedies, police officials are urging motorists to exercise increased caution on the roads.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should adhere to all road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives,” said police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
He emphasized the importance of avoiding hazardous overtaking and speeding, stating,
“Above all, motorists should avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so.”
As the nation reflects on these sobering statistics, authorities continue to call for heightened awareness and responsibility among drivers to prevent further loss of life on Zimbabwe’s roads.
