Mthwakazi Republic Party Intensifies Secession Campaign, Petitions SADC for Mediation

Innocent Sibonginkosi Ncube
The Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) has reignited its decades-long push for independence from Zimbabwe, formally petitioning the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to mediate negotiations with the Harare government.

In a letter dated May 20, MRP leader Mqondisi Moyo urged the regional bloc to intervene, alleging systemic oppression and “dehumanisation” of the Mthwakazi people, who span Matabeleland provinces and parts of the Midlands .

Calls for International Involvement

Moyo’s petition specifically requested SADC to invite the United Kingdom and the British Royal Family to negotiations, citing Britain’s colonial-era role in dismantling the Mthwakazi territory.

He referenced the 1923 dissolution of the Jameson Line, a colonial boundary separating Mashonaland and Matebeleland, as a historical injustice requiring redress.

“Noting the central role that Britain played in destroying Mthwakazi, I further request SADC to invite the office of His Majesty, King Charles, and UK representatives,” Moyo wrote .

The SADC secretariat acknowledged receipt of the petition on May 20 but has yet to issue a public response.

This marks the MRP’s second appeal to the bloc, following a similar petition in September 2023 .

Government Resistance and Historical Grievances

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has repeatedly dismissed the MRP’s demands, asserting that Zimbabwe remains a “unitary state” recognized by the United Nations. He previously warned secessionist activists that their efforts would “shorten their lives,” framing the campaign as a threat to national stability .

The MRP, however, remains undeterred, drawing inspiration from SADC’s recent memorandum of understanding with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (Western Sahara), which supports self-determination for the disputed region.

Moyo argued that Mthwakazi’s case parallels this precedent:

“Seceding from Zimbabwe is the only avenue for our people to regain full human status; otherwise, we continue as second-class citizens” .

Broader Campaign for Autonomy

The party’s vision for an independent Mthwakazi Republic hinges on rectifying historical grievances, including the 1980s Gukurahundi massacres, which left thousands dead in Matabeleland. MRP has also petitioned the International Criminal Court and UN to investigate alleged ongoing human rights abuses and economic marginalization of the region .

Founded in 2014, the MRP frames its mission as a restoration of the pre-colonial Mthwakazi kingdom, advocating for cultural preservation and autonomy.

Despite limited international traction, the party has escalated its lobbying efforts, blending historical claims with contemporary appeals for self-determination .

Regional Implications

Analysts suggest SADC’s response—or lack thereof—could set a precedent for how the bloc handles secessionist movements amid rising calls for self-determination across Africa.

For now, the MRP’s bid remains a contentious flashpoint in Zimbabwe’s fraught political landscape, echoing unresolved tensions between Harare and its minority communities.
