Tragedy in Epworth: One-Year-Old Dies After Falling Into Open Well

Epworth, Harare – A one-year-old baby tragically died on Monday after falling into a nine-meter-deep open well in Komboniyatsva, Epworth, police confirmed.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the infant, aged one year and three months, had been playing outside with other children while the mother was occupied with household chores inside their home.

Police Statement on the Incident

In an official statement, the ZRP said:

“The ZRP reports a sad incident in which a toddler died after falling into an open well about nine metres deep at Komboniyatsva, Epworth, Harare on 12/05/25. The incident occurred while the mother of the victim was doing household chores in the house, and the victim was playing with other children outside.”

Community in Mourning

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Komboniyatsva community, raising concerns over unsecured wells and water sources in residential areas.

Local leaders have called for urgent action to prevent similar incidents.

“This is a heartbreaking loss that could have been avoided,” said a community representative.

“We need stricter safety measures around open wells to protect our children.”

Authorities Urge Vigilance

Child safety advocates and emergency services have reminded parents and guardians to supervise young children closely, especially near hazardous areas.

The police are continuing their investigations, though foul play is not suspected.

The family has requested privacy as they mourn their devastating loss.
