Eleven Dead in Separate Highway Crashes Across Zimbabwe

Harare Correspondent
Zimbabwe’s roads have turned deadly this week, with eleven lives lost in three separate accidents across major highways, police confirmed.

Authorities have issued fresh warnings to motorists about reckless driving and dangerous overtaking maneuvers.

Gweru Bus Crash Claims Five Lives

The most devastating incident occurred on 7 May when a Hungwe bus overturned at Fairmile roundabout along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

“Five passengers died instantly when the bus failed to navigate the roundabout,” said police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

Eighteen of the 21 injured have been discharged from Gweru General Hospital, while three remain under medical care.

The victims include:

  • Nyasha Enifa (30), Murambinda
  • Beauty Tore (36), Dangamvura, Mutare
  • Mercy Nhaka (48), Torwood, Kwekwe
  • Julian Dlamini (20), Adelaide Park, Gweru
  • Kunashe Murewa (4), Macheke, Marondera

Headlands Truck Collision Kills Two

Two days later on 9 May, a horrific collision occurred along the Harare-Mutare Road when a Hino truck was sideswiped during an overtaking attempt.

“The impact caused the truck to veer off-road and roll onto its side,” Nyathi explained.

“Two passengers in the loading box were ejected and fatally struck by tobacco bailing equipment.”

The deceased were identified as Tapera Macheka and Sabstin Mupfumi, both from Headlands.

Harare Hit-and-Run Leaves Three Dead

In a separate Budiriro incident the same day, three pedestrians died when struck by a runaway Fuso truck.

Police revealed the vehicle had been involved in an earlier collision with a Ford truck that fled the scene.

“A high-speed chase ensued before the Fuso lost control at the Kushanda Crescent intersection,” Nyathi stated.

The truck had no passengers aboard at the time of the fatal crash.

Police Issue Stern Warning

Commissioner Nyathi emphasized the need for road safety:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists must abide by traffic regulations to prevent these needless tragedies. Reckless overtaking and speeding continue to claim innocent lives.”

The recent spate of accidents has reignited national concerns about Zimbabwe’s road safety crisis, with authorities vowing to intensify traffic law enforcement across major highways.
