A daring high-speed chase through the streets of Harare ended in the arrest of two suspected carjackers, Mufaro Mupandira (29) and Brandon Chitiyo (21), who had been terrorizing taxi drivers in the area.
The two, from Overspill, Epworth, were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS) and are facing three counts of robbery of motor vehicles.
According to CID spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, the suspects had developed a clever modus operandi, where they would hire taxi drivers and then rob them of their cars and belongings.
“On December 21, 2024, the suspects hired a taxi driver to take them to Besa Village Chief Seke, Chitungwiza, but along the way, they robbed him of his Honda Fit,” Detective Inspector Muteweri said.
The following day, the duo struck again, robbing another taxi driver of his Honda Fit in Domboshava. They used the same tactic, pretending to be passengers before pouncing on the unsuspecting driver.
However, their luck ran out on December 29, 2024, when detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad spotted one of the stolen cars in the Harare Central Business District. A high-speed chase ensued, leading to the arrest of the two suspects.
“As the Zimbabwe Republic Police, we would like to underscore the importance of using modern technology as a target hardening measure,” Detective Inspector Muteweri said.
“We also urge motorists not to pick up strangers, as this can put them at risk of being robbed or carjacked.”
The two suspects have since appeared in court and were remanded in custody.
