Binga – A devastating incident occurred on Wednesday evening when a vehicle belonging to the Binga Rural District Council struck a landmine in the Sebungwe area along the Zambezi River, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to three others.

The incident took place around 5 p.m., when the council vehicle, carrying three employees, was returning to Binga Centre after a work assignment in Sebungwe.

Due to muddy conditions on the main road, the driver opted for an alternative route, which tragically led them to the concealed landmine.

“The vehicle had departed from Binga Centre and was on its way back when it struck the landmine,” a police spokesperson confirmed.

One passenger died instantly, while two others succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the hospital.

Local authorities and police responded promptly to the scene, and investigations have commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We are currently investigating the origins of the landmine, which is suspected to have been planted during the Independence War in the 1970s,” the spokesperson added.

The victims were reportedly passengers who had requested a lift to Binga, highlighting the tragic nature of the incident. Community members expressed their shock and sorrow.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear that lives have been lost in this manner. We must ensure our roads are safe,” said a resident of Binga.

As the community mourns the loss, efforts are being made to assess the area for further dangers, and a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the source of the landmine.
