Legendary singer, songwriter, bass player and former Pastor Zex Manatsa has succumbed to cancer.
He became famous in the 70s and 80wls for his hit songs Mambo Makwatila, Chipo Chirorwa, Tea Hobvu and his recording breaking wedding that was attended by 50 000 guests.
Manatsa began his career in the late 1960s forming the band, Green Arrow.
Unfortunately in 1987 he was involved in a fatal accident which killed some of the band members and instantly splitting the group.
After that accident he converted to Christianity joining the Zimbabwe Assemblies of God Africa (ZAOGA) ministries becoming a Pastor there for 20 years up until his retirement.
He was to release smash hit songs for the then famous Zimbabwean football teams, Highlanders F.C from Bulawayo and Harare giants Caps United and Dynamos F.C.
The songs, Highlanders iwinile, Tamirira Dynamos igowese, Makepekepe Shaiswa Mufaro.
Last year in August he shared on his Facebook page that he was battling a rare cancer which is known as Multiple Myeloma.
Manatsa’s death was announced on his Facebook page by his team that he had died.
The announcement reads:
“With great sadness we would like to let everyone know that our Father, Our Legend, Pastor and Sekuru Zexie Manatsa has succumbed to cancer. May his dear soul rest in peace.
01.01.44- 20.01.2022.”
Zex had just celebrated his 78th birthday on New year’s day.
Legendary musician Sulumani Chimbetu sent out his condolences to the family on Facebook.
“My heartfelt condolences to the Manatsa Family ndinongoti dai Mwari vatinyaradza saivo muridzi wehupenyu”. said Chimbetu.
Manatsa is survived by his wife Stella Manatsa, 6 sons including Tendai who is married to Oliver Mtukudzi’s daughter Selma Mtukudzi and his grandchildren
