National Blood Service Zimbabwe Launches Festive Season Blood Drive

Health Reporter

The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has officially launched its annual festive season blood collection campaign, aiming to collect 7,460 units of blood by mid-January 2024. This initiative is crucial to meet the increased demand for blood during the holiday period, which is often marked by a rise in road accidents and hospital admissions.

Campaign Details

  • Duration: The campaign will run until January 14, 2024.
  • CEO Statement: NBSZ Chief Executive Officer Lucy Mary Marowa emphasized the importance of this campaign, stating that the festive season typically sees a surge in blood demand due to increased travel and celebrations. She urged eligible individuals to visit blood donation centers or mobile clinics to contribute.

Current Blood Supply Situation

NBSZ is currently facing a critical shortage of blood group O, with reserves at less than a day’s supply. Marowa highlighted the urgency for donors of this blood type, as it is universally needed and depletes quickly.

  • 2024 Collection Status: So far, NBSZ has collected 71,544 units of blood this year, surpassing last year’s total of 70,187 units. However, they are still 12% short of their annual target of 88,430 units.

Community Involvement

The Pledge 25 Club, a youth initiative encouraging donors to commit to 25 donations by age 30, has been instrumental in addressing the blood supply gap, especially during school closures.

NBSZ is also reaching out to corporate partners to help organize blood drives and promote donations. Blood donation clinics will remain operational throughout the holiday season, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Mobile teams will be deployed nationwide to facilitate donations.

Call to Action

Marowa urged the public to adopt a culture of blood donation, stating, “Blood can only be available if we donate. One day, the life you save may be your own.”

Eligible donors aged 16–65, in good health, and weighing over 50 kilograms can donate at centers located in Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo, Mutare, and Gweru. Schedules for mobile clinics are available on NBSZ’s social media platforms.

Conclusion

The festive season blood drive by NBSZ is a vital effort to ensure adequate blood supplies during a time of increased need. The organization encourages everyone to participate in this life-saving initiative and help support their community.
