Australia – A Zimbabwean woman has made headlines after she decided to pay back her husband’s lobola, or bride price, due to his refusal to assist with household chores despite being unemployed in Australia.
The woman shared her story anonymously on social media, igniting a heated debate about gender roles and responsibilities within marriages.
In her post, the woman recounted her struggles with her husband, who frequently reminded her of the lobola he had paid whenever she asked for help around the house.
“Tiri muZim I was the banker. He would provide when he could, but he spent his weekends drinking and enjoying himself while I took on consultancy roles to make ends meet,” she explained.
After completing her Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification, she decided to move to Australia, citing the financial burden in Zimbabwe as unsustainable.
“When I asked him what he was providing for the family, he insisted he was the man of the house,” she said.
Following this confrontation, he agreed to relocate with her and their children.
However, once in Australia, the woman found that her husband had not changed his ways.
“He refused to do chores or help with the kids. Life here is tough, and he struggled to adapt,” she noted.
“I was the breadwinner, and while I didn’t mind, I expected him to meet me halfway.”
Frustrated by her husband’s constant reminders about the lobola, she took a drastic step.
“I gave him back the US$5,000 he paid for lobola and said,
‘This is goodbye from me.’ I have gained weight, and I’m glowing,” she shared, emphasizing her newfound independence.
The woman also mentioned that she had taken her ex-husband to the authorities to ensure he pays child support.
“He struggles to clean his place or even feed and bathe the kids when they visit on weekends,”
She added.
“Now he’s begging me to take him back.”
This story has sparked discussions about the expectations placed on men and women in relationships, particularly in the context of cultural practices like lobola.
As the woman moves forward, she reflects on her journey and the importance of mutual support in a partnership.
