In a candid interview, billionaire Jeff Bezos has opened up about his high-profile divorce from ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, describing it as a painful and costly experience that has soured him on the institution of marriage.
“I lost over $38 billion in cash and 35% of Amazon to my ex-wife, MacKenzie. I was worth about $76 billion by then,” Bezos revealed.
The Amazon founder went on to say that he can “never make the mistake of getting married again.”
Bezos recounted how his 25-year marriage to MacKenzie suddenly unraveled, with his wife informing him one day that she was “already tired of our boring marriage and she wanted a divorce.”
When Bezos pleaded with her to reconsider, MacKenzie allegedly gave him an ultimatum – hand over half of his $76 billion fortune and 50% of his Amazon shares, or she would file for divorce.
Despite Bezos’ desperate attempts to save the marriage, MacKenzie proceeded with the divorce filing. In the end, Bezos’ legal team was able to negotiate a settlement where he paid his ex-wife over $38 billion in cash and transferred 35% of his Amazon stake to her.
“If she could do this to me after 25 years of marriage, it only means marriage isn’t meant for men. I’ll never get married again because I’m not a women’s empowerment agency,” Bezos declared bitterly.
The divorce between Bezos and MacKenzie has been ranked the second most expensive in history. MacKenzie Scott’s current net worth is estimated at $43.6 billion, making her one of the wealthiest women in the world.
Since the divorce, MacKenzie has become a prominent philanthropist, donating billions to various charitable causes. Bezos, on the other hand, appears to have sworn off marriage for good, vowing never to make that “mistake” again.
