A 26-year-old prisoner, Evidence Litwayi, has escaped from Kingstone Prison Farm in Bindura.
Litwayi was serving a 20-month sentence for unlawful entry and had been scheduled for release on May 3, 2025. His escape occurred on November 20, 2024, around 11 am.
Circumstances of the Escape
On the day of his escape, Litwayi was among twelve inmates assigned to water the garden at the prison farm. They were supervised by correctional officer Kelvin Kanjanda, who had taken them to a maize field. While tasked with moving black poly-plastic pipes, Litwayi exploited the cover provided by the tall maize plants to make his escape.
After approximately five minutes, the other inmates realized Litwayi was missing and alerted Officer Kanjanda. He promptly informed his superiors, leading to a mobilization of a search team. Unfortunately, the search efforts did not yield any results, and the incident was reported to the police.
Conclusion
The escape of Evidence Litwayi raises concerns about prison security and the effectiveness of supervision during inmate work assignments.
Authorities are likely to intensify their search efforts to locate the escaped convict.
