A 30-year-old car dealer from Bulawayo, known as Brighton Chipunza or “Dash,” has been arrested in connection with the theft of a luxury vehicle, specifically a South African registered Toyota Fortuner.

The vehicle was stolen from a car wash in the central business district (CBD) last week. Chipunza is set to appear in court following the discovery of incriminating WhatsApp messages linking him to the crime.

Details of the Theft

On November 18, the vehicle’s owner, Silibaziso Ncube, had assigned an employee, Jonathan Ngando Thuli, to take the car to a local car wash. After cleaning, the car was parked securely, but when Ncube returned later that day, she found it missing. Staff at the car wash claimed they had seen the vehicle leave, mistakenly believing it was being driven by Ncube.

Investigation and Recovery

The police were alerted, and the Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS) began their Investigations. They discovered that the car wash’s CCTV cameras had been deactivated, complicating the investigation. However, the vehicle was equipped with a tracking device, which ultimately led to its recovery in Harare on November 19.

The vehicle was found at the residence of a suspected accomplice, Julius Chitunhu, who has since been remanded on bail. During the investigation, evidence such as a grinder and spray paints was recovered, indicating attempts to alter the vehicle’s identification.

Previous Allegations Against Chipunza

Chipunza has a history of involvement in questionable car dealings. He was previously implicated in the sale of a stolen Ford Ranger and has also been linked to the theft of a vehicle belonging to a prominent local businessman’s daughter.

This case highlights ongoing issues with vehicle theft in the region and the complexities involved in tracking and recovering stolen vehicles.
