A recent Afrobarometer survey reveals that half of Zimbabwe’s population is frustrated by the increasing prevalence of drug and substance abuse in their communities.

This issue has been particularly concerning among the youths, with the government acknowledging the growing problem, especially among unemployed young people.

Key Findings from the Survey

  • Widespread Concern: Approximately 79% of Zimbabweans report that drug and substance abuse is widespread, with 56% considering it to be “very widespread.” The perception of this issue is notably higher in urban areas, where 93% of respondents acknowledge its prevalence.
  • Factors Contributing to Abuse: Researchers attribute the rise in substance abuse to various factors, including waning parenting, poverty, idleness, broken homes, and social influences.
  • Trust in Institutions: The survey indicates that most citizens trust schools and family members to effectively combat drug abuse, while confidence in other authorities like religious leaders and judges is comparatively lower.

Suggested Solutions

The survey highlights several strategies that Zimbabweans believe could effectively address the drug abuse crisis:

  1. Arresting Offenders: The most widely supported strategy is to impose severe penalties on drug users and offenders.
  2. Education: About 23% of respondents advocate for educating citizens about the dangers of drug abuse.
  3. Reducing Drug Peddling: Another 23% suggest intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking.

The findings from the Afro barometer survey underscore a significant public concern regarding drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe, particularly among the youth.

The community’s call for effective intervention through education and stricter law enforcement reflects a collective desire to address this pressing issue.
