Struggling Public Transporter, Zupco, Owes Former Workers Over Six Months’ Pay

Business Reporter

Once a vibrant public passenger transporter, the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) is reportedly in doldrums, owing its former employees more than six months’ salaries in US dollars.

Some workers claim they haven’t received any payment since July of last year.

Frustrated by the situation, former employees have expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that Zupco is only compensating them in the local currency, Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). One former employee lamented,

“The last time I received US dollars was in June last year.”

Limited communication from management has prompted some ex-employees to band together in search of legal assistance for their unpaid wages. One worker described their experience, saying,

“I visit the Zupco depot in Bulawayo daily but receive poor treatment and no answers.”

In May, allegations of corruption within Zupco surfaced, with reports suggesting that management is attempting to conceal financial difficulties. Recently, the government placed Zupco under the Mutapa Investment Fund in an effort to stabilize the struggling company.

Workers have also raised concerns about potential layoffs, claiming these are being planned to obscure issues ahead of a possible audit, and they highlighted worries about misused funds from recent election campaign bus hires.
