A 34-year-old employee of Mpilo Central Hospital, Lizuba Nkosi Ngula, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for stealing mobile phones from vulnerable patients.
Ngula, who worked as an HIV testing counselor, exploited the fragile conditions of patients in the hospital’s postnatal ward.
Details of the Crimes
Ngula was convicted on three counts of theft after a trial in Bulawayo. The incidents occurred on November 6, 2024, when he stole a Samsung Galaxy A05 worth $100 from a patient named Lucy Machingauta. He also took an Itel P36 cellphone from another patient, Martha Luwe, on the same day, and two days later, he stole an O King cellphone from 19-year-old Shamiso Ndlovu. Following his arrest, police managed to recover the stolen devices.
Sentencing and Community Service
While the magistrate, Nomagugu Maphosa, initially imposed a one-year jail term, she conditionally suspended three months. Ngula will serve the remaining nine months in prison and is required to complete 315 hours of community service at Cowdray Park Primary School.
Context of the Incident
This theft case comes amid other troubling incidents at Mpilo Hospital, including the case of a fake doctor, Taurai Prosper Vanhuvaone, who operated undetected for over two years. After being arrested for impersonating a doctor, Vanhuvaone was caught again on hospital grounds attempting to deceive patients.
These incidents have prompted the Ministry of Health to investigate the hospital’s employee verification processes and overall security measures.
Conclusion
The arrest and sentencing of Ngula highlight serious issues of trust and safety within healthcare institutions, particularly regarding the treatment of vulnerable patients.
The ongoing investigations into hospital practices aim to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure a safer environment for patients seeking care.
