Garbage Pile Up a Health Risk at Mbare Musika

Health Reporter

A significant garbage pile-up at Mbare Musika has ignited outrage among local residents, prompting them to take action against the Harare City Council.

The accumulation of waste has raised serious health concerns, particularly in light of recent tragedies linked to poor sanitation.

Health Concerns and Legal Action

The situation has become particularly poignant for the family of Juliet Chatambudza, who tragically died from cholera. Juliet had previously filed a complaint against the Harare City Council in 2022, urging them to address the garbage issue near her home. Her daughter, Shyline Chatambudza, is now advocating for immediate action, highlighting the dire conditions that have persisted since her mother’s warnings. In a recent letter, Shyline stated,

“The worms and maggots she warned about two years ago are now a daily reality for all of us. We pay our fees, we deserve dignity”.

Community Frustration

Residents have expressed their frustration over the deteriorating environment. Stalle Mudzagada, a local resident, described the situation as a “ticking time bomb,” emphasizing that their pleas for help have gone unanswered. Another resident, Tanyarwadza Runhare, echoed these sentiments, stating,

“The Council has abandoned us. They collect fees but ignore our basic needs. People are dying, and it seems like they don’t care. We are fed up”.

Conclusion

The garbage crisis at Mbare Musika underscores the urgent need for the Harare City Council to fulfill its responsibilities to the community. As residents continue to voice their concerns and seek accountability, the situation remains a pressing public health issue that demands immediate attention.
