Tragedy struck in Gweru’s Athlone suburb when two council employees suffocated inside a sewer manhole while attending to a blockage. The victims reportedly inhaled toxic gases, sparking outrage among residents who blame the Gweru City Council for negligence.

Vimbai Chingwaramusee, Gweru City Council Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and pledged a thorough investigation to prevent similar tragedies.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the tragic loss of two Gweru City employees… Our thoughts and condolences go to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased. We take the safety of our workers very seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation.”

However, residents and stakeholders are unhappy, accusing the council of neglecting worker welfare. Cornilia Selipiwe, GRRA director, emphasized,

“We need robust measures for worker safety… Why buy luxurious cars at the expense of workers without protective clothing or salaries?” A resident added,

“Council is to blame for lacking proper procedures and protective gear, like masks and gas detectors.”

Residents are now calling for the council to prioritize worker safety, citing concerns over:

  • Lack of Protective Gear: Workers lack essential safety equipment, such as masks and gas detectors.
  • Inadequate Procedures: Proper protocols weren’t followed before entering the manhole.
  • Neglect of Worker Welfare: The council is accused of prioritizing luxury over worker well-being.

The incident highlights the need for improved workplace safety and accountability within the Gweru City Council.
