Bulawayo Mayor, David Coltart, has announced plans to name a street in the city after the late historian and educationist Pathisa Nyathi. Nyathi, who passed away at the age of 73 after battling an undisclosed illness, was laid to rest at Lady Stanley cemetery in Bulawayo.

During Nyathi’s funeral held at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre, Mayor Coltart delivered a heartfelt tribute, highlighting Nyathi’s significant contributions to the documentation of history and the preservation of Ndebele culture.

Coltart remarked on Nyathi’s extensive body of work, which includes over sixty books and various newspaper columns, emphasizing that his legacy will serve as a foundation for future generations to learn about the rich history of Zimbabwe, particularly the Ndebele people.

Coltart noted,

“He was the personification of history, culture, tradition… Fortunately, he used his time on earth wisely. He has left this rich tapestry, this rich legacy through the Amagugu Heritage Centre.”

This center, which Nyathi helped establish, is a testament to his commitment to cultural preservation and education.

Nyathi’s literary contributions, primarily written in Ndebele, have left a lasting impact on the community. His dedication to sharing knowledge and engaging with others has been fondly remembered by those who knew him. Coltart reflected on how Nyathi was always available to share his thoughts and experiences, reinforcing the profound influence he had on many individuals.

The decision to name a street after Nyathi is a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy and contributions to Zimbabwean history and culture.
