Tragic Incident in Gweru: Two Workers Suffocate in Manhole

In a heartbreaking incident, two employees of the Gweru City Council suffocated while clearing a manhole in the Athlone area on the afternoon of November 6, 2024.

The local authority’s spokesperson, Vimbai Chingwaramusee, confirmed the tragedy, stating that the names of the deceased will be released once their next of kin have been informed.

Chingwaramusee expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that the workers succumbed to gas suffocation while performing their duties. She emphasized the City’s commitment to the safety of its employees and residents, stating,

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased. The City of Gweru values the lives of its employees and residents, and we take the safety of our workers very seriously.”

In light of this tragic event, the Gweru City Council has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and to implement measures aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.

Chingwaramusee reassured the public that the council is dedicated to ensuring the safety of its workers during such operations.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by municipal workers and the importance of safety protocols in hazardous environments.
