Louis Serenetra Moyo, a 49-year-old Zimbabwean, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his South African girlfriend, Thobile Grace Khoza.
The tragic incident took place on March 12, 2024, after Moyo discovered that Khoza had spent R15,000 (approximately $800) that he had saved for her lobola, the traditional bride price.
Moyo, who was an undocumented immigrant working as a security guard, had been living with Khoza since 2020. He had been using her bank account to manage his savings. In a fit of rage over the spending of the lobola money, Moyo assaulted Khoza and fatally stabbed her, leaving her to bleed to death. After the attack, he locked the room and fled the scene.
Khoza’s decomposed body was discovered three days later by her landlord, who noticed a foul smell emanating from the apartment. Moyo was arrested shortly thereafter, found in possession of Khoza’s bank card, ID, and cell phone.
During his trial, Moyo pleaded guilty to premeditated murder, admitting that his violent reaction was senseless. Judge Dario Dosio condemned Moyo’s actions and imposed a life sentence, along with an additional six-month term for his illegal status in South Africa.
This case highlights the severe consequences of domestic violence and the tragic outcomes that can arise from such situations.
