Bulawayo City Council (BCC) with other stakeholders took action in a clean up campaign yesterday morning.

The clean up campaign was done at 6th Avenue between Robert Mugabe Way and George Silundika next to a local Hotel.

The area had been turned into an illegal dumping site by individuals.

The BCC could not wait for the first Friday of the month, which was set aside by the President of Zimbabwe as a day to clean our surroundings as Zimbabweans.

Deputy Mayor of Bulawayo, Councillor Mlandu Ncube led the clean up campaign.

He warned the public against littering.

“The acting Town Clerk and other officials took a tour around the City and they noticed litter dumped in some areas, they then came up with a programme of collecting refuse, “said Councillor Mlandu Ncube.

The event was graced by the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce who is also the owner of a liquor wholesaler along Fife Street, Honourable Raj Modi.

Hon. Raj Modi played a vital role as he contributed two vehicles to help in cleaning up the sanitary lanes in the city.

“We really want to thank the Honourable Minister Modi for his contribution in this clean up campaign “, added Councillor Ncube.

In an interview with Zim GBC News, Councillor Mlandu Ncube emphasised on heavy fines that have been introduced by the BCC on those who are found littering.

“As the City of Bulawayo, we are introducing heavy fines….if we can’t find the person who dropped the paper we will arrest the person next to the paper” said Councillor Ncube.

Property owners are also encouraged to keep their surroundings clean.

The Deputy Minister also commented on the programme.

“We need to work together regardless of political parties, in order to keep our city clean. We are not going to stop here but we are going to continue with this programme”, said Min. Raj Modi.

The Deputy Mayor also mentioned that doors are still open for other stakeholders who would like to partner with the City Fathers in the clean up campaign programme.

At the site a white Mazda BT-50 was caught red handed about to dump litter.

The Deputy Mayor warned the driver and instructed him to dump waste at one of the designated areas.

The residents of Bulawayo are encouraged to join in and maintain the City clean under the programme #IBulawayoEhlanzekileyoAyibuye.
