Masimba Holdings Limited, a major Zimbabwean engineering and infrastructure firm, has been awarded a $200,000 contract by the Zimbabwean government and the City of Harare to rebuild the Mbare Traders Market, which was destroyed by fire last month.
This contract was awarded without a formal tender process due to the emergency nature of the situation, as declared by the cabinet.
The government’s swift response aims to support the over 4,500 affected traders and develop modern market infrastructure to boost tax revenue from local commerce. Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe handed over the temporary site to Masimba Holdings, with several high-ranking officials in attendance.
Present at the hand over ceremony was, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere, Harare Metropolitan Province Minister Charles Tavengwa, Women’s Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, Harare and Mayor Jacob Mafwas accompanied by several Harare City councilors.
Questioned about the selection process without going to tender, Harare Mayor Mafume confirmed that no tender process was followed, citing the urgency of the situation.
“This was an emergency, declared a national disaster by cabinet, so there was no tendering. The focus was on quick, efficient execution to avoid delays,” Mafume explained.
