HARARE— The government has announced a major redesign for the Mbare Musika Traders Market following a devastating fire, with plans for a new three-storey structure that will accommodate up to 10,000 traders.
Information Minister Jenfan Muswere provided updates during a post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, stating that the planned works are part of the government’s “Building Back Better” initiative.
“A three (3) floor model design is being proposed at the Mbare Musika Traders Market whereby businesses will be classified and accommodated on all three levels. The reconstructed main market will accommodate at least 10,000 traders,” Muswere said.
He also noted that the project will serve to pilot the Smart Market concept, aimed at enhancing the trading environment through the provision of safe and modern facilities.
This reconstruction follows the declaration of a State of Disaster by President Mnangagwa on October 14, 2024, after the fire affected 4,695 traders and disrupted the livelihoods of approximately 23,000 people. Muswere emphasized that the government’s response plan includes immediate relief efforts such as cash transfers, school fee payments, and psycho-social support.
“Immediate resuscitation of businesses is critical,” he noted, adding, “We are providing loans, grants, and stimulus packages to help traders restock their goods and get back on their feet.”
To assist traders during the reconstruction phase, the Harare City Council has designated an alternative workspace in an open area opposite Carter House. The reconstructed market will feature upgraded infrastructure designed to prevent future disasters.
Work on the new Mbare Musika Traders Market is expected to commence in November 2024 and take approximately seven months to complete. Muswere reiterated that the project will serve as a pilot for the “Smart Market” concept, focused on providing safe and modern facilities for traders.
“The objective of the Smart Market concept is the enhancement of the trading environment through the provision of safe and modern facilities,” Muswere concluded.
