The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a serious warning to motorists, urging them to “exercise heightened caution and to diligently check their surroundings before reversing their vehicles.”
This advisory follows a tragic incident that occurred at the Navata Business Centre in Zhombe on October 27, 2024, where an infant, just one year and seven months old, lost her life after being struck by an Iveco rigid truck that was backing up.
The accident, which took place around 8:00 AM, underscores the critical importance of situational awareness for drivers in busy areas.
In a separate but equally tragic event on October 26, 2024, a 15-year-old male juvenile succumbed to his injuries after falling from a moving Toyota Hilux truck at the 90-kilometer peg along the Bulawayo-Tshefunye Road.
The young victim had been “dangerously clinging to the mudguard of a trailer being towed by the vehicle” when he lost his grip and fell.
Unfortunately, the driver of the Toyota Hilux did not stop to assist after the incident, prompting a search for accountability. These incidents highlight the high stakes of road safety and the dire consequences of negligence and reckless behavior.
As investigations into both accidents are underway, the ZRP is reinforcing its message of “precaution and responsibility among all road users.”
